The final act of our ceremony today is the breaking of the glass which serves to remind us of two very important aspects of a marriage. The (Spouse1) and (Spouse2)- and everyone – should consider these marriage vows as an IRREVOCABLE ACT – just as permanent and final as the breaking of this glass is unchangeable. But the breaking of the glass also is a warning of the FRAILTY of a marriage. That love is special and must be protected. That sometimes a single thoughtless act or breech of trust can damage a marriage in ways that are very difficult to undo – just as it would be so difficult to undo the breaking of this glass.
Our prayer today is that just as a broken glass can never be reconstructed, so too is this relationship forever.
The glass is covered or wrapped in cloth in order to contain the pieces. If all goes right, after the glass breaks the crowd yells ‘Mazel Tov’ and claps good luck into the couple!
